| The resort towns of Malindi and Watamu are home to white
sandy beaches surrounded by expanses of tropical forests,
ancient historical sites and a fascinating local culture.
Beach
safari to Malindi and Watamu offers you
peaceful walks through these forest, explore the
mangroves by boat, dive on the reef or try your hand
at big game fishing. Water sports at these coastal
resorts include sailing, waterskiing, jetskiing,
parasailing and more. The lattest water sports on
offer in this area is Kite Surfing, using a large
kite to tow a windsurfer.
Surfing: Malindi is the best spot on the Kenyan
coast for surfing. The outer reefs attract a
large swell all year round, peaking in June through
September when the seasonal monsoons bring some
excellent breakers. Surfers should bring their own
boards and wax.
Boating: An ideal way to spend an afternoon in
Watamu is to take an organized boat trip into the
mangroves and estuaries of Mida Creek. This creek is
home to a fantastic range of bird life, and there
are countless winding channels and estuaries to
explore. These trips can be locally arranged in
Watamu.

SCUBA
Diving and Snorkelling: There are several world
class dive sites on the North Coast. Diving is
good all year round, although visibility lessens
during July and August due to silting and high seas.
One of the best sites are in the Watamu Marine
National Park. These range from shallow coral
gardens ideal for learners to spectacular outer reef
walls. Sea life is always consistently abundant.
Sightings of Whale Sharks on outer reef dives along
the Kenyan Coast in February-March each year are
almost guaranteed . The whale shark is the largest
fish in the world, measuring up to 18 metres and
weigh up to 20 tons. It feeds on platonic creatures
and small fish, and has only tiny teeth.
Turtle Reef (10-15 meters): attracting shoals of
parrot, surgeon fish, white-tip reef sharks
and the occasional Green sea Turtle.

The
Moray Reef : a good site for octopus and eel,
including a huge semi-tame moray known locally as
George, angel fish, tang, and the occasional grouper
or barracuda.
The Canyon, a long sandy channel at 28m,
bordered on each side by deep drop-offs. There is an
impressive arch covered with soft corals, and the
reef walls are alive with trevalies and snapper. The
channel itself is a good place to see the occasional
ray or reef shark.
Non divers' option is snorkeling, with plenty
of shallow and accessible coral gardens, especially
at the Watamu Marine National Park, this can be a
rewarding experience. |

Big
Game Fishing: Big game fishing is widely
available on the North coast. There are many highly
skilled local operators in Malindi. Hemingway's
Hotel in Watamu is a fishing resort with an
excellent international reputation. Excellent boats
with state of the art equipment are available for
full and half day charter. The main game fish
include Sailfish and Marlin, Kingfish, Wahoo, Horse
Mackerel and others. A tag and release program
ensures eco-friendly fishing. Big game fishing can
be arranged in season (December-March). Type of Fish
to be found include;
Sailfish:
Sails are by far the most numerous of the Billfish
we have here. Finicky and sometimes skittish or
playful, they can make a fool of the best of anglers
at times, and are very dramatic when not over
powered by excessively heavy tackle. There is
a run of Sail just outside Watamu around August,
while the main season off Malindi, a few miles north
of here, runs November to March. |

Blue
Marlin: A jumping
Blue Marlin is the ultimate thrill as the power and
fury of these fish under full throttle is simply
awesome. Complete changes of direction by these fish
will convince fishermen that there are two on at
once and frantic re-routing of the boat is the order
of the day as line is usually getting desperately
low within seconds of the opening of hostilities.
Black
Marlin: Blacks come
closer to shore and are often encountered in very
shallow water. The buffalo of the species, this guy
is tough. If you haven’t done your homework he’ll
find you out and be gone. Often fighting deep, using
his pectoral fins to hold him down in the water they
are worthy adversaries. Expected around
August/September, but the main season is from
December to mid/late March.

Broadbill Swordfish:
The broadbill is arguably the strongest fighter in
the ocean, and an experience not to be missed. So
far mainly small broadies have been caught off
Watamu, (i.e. 30 – 70kg) but 4 or 5 in a night is
not uncommon.
Shark:
We have three species
of Caraharinus here- Hammerheads, Tigers and the
high leaping Mako. These are often caught while
fishing for tuna; they also take Marlin baits fished
live. A rarity off Kenya is the Great White shark,
with a real whopper netted by local fishermen in
1995. Unfortunately the fishermen had quickly
dismembered the fish for food before the whole fish
could be weighed and photographed. The head alone
weighed in at over 1000lb, with the whole fish
estimated at 5-6,000lb!

Wahoo:
Wahoo are renowned
for their searing first run (being one of the
fastest fish in the sea) and when there are a lot of
them around. Chaos reigns as lines are cut all over
the place by fish striking at terminal tackle moving
through the water.
Kingfish: Kingfish
will often chop up a bait or two just behind the
hook before you get one but make up for it by being
excellent table fare.
Yellowfin Tuna: Big
Yellowfin (up to 200 lbs.) migrate past here between
August and November (and sometimes come back again)
and the ‘schoolie’ small Yellowfin are around
virtually year round. Very strong fish and, with a
big one being a good test of character, Yellowfin
always give a powerful performance, invariably going
deep. Another very worthy quarry on light spinning
gear.
