| East African Women’s League |
The league was inaugurated in
1917and now celebrates over 90 years of voluntary
service and commitment to help the whole community,
by concentrating on the aim of improving the lives,
physical, mental and moral of all women and children
whatever their race or religion. The League’s motto
is “Build for Kenya” and the work is as relevant now
as it was all those years ago.
Through the work of East African Women’s League -
EAWL, hospitals, children’s homes and hospices have
been built and maintained and schools for the
disabled, the blind and the deaf have been funded
and assisted to run successfully. Prisons are
visited and the welfare of women prisoners has been
assessed and changes fought for where necessary.
The League is represented by 24 branches through out
the country governed by a central council comprising
of a National Chairman, 4 Vice chairmen, 50 elected
councilors representing the branches and the branch
chairman of various branches. An elected Executive
committee meets monthly to handle the administration
of the league. It is affiliated to The Nation
Council of Women in Kenya and is a constituent
member of the Associated Country Women of the World.
There is also a branch in England through which
those who have left Kenya can keep in touch with
events.
The leagues headquarters is located in Nairobi; here
the executive council meets, functions are held and
an excellent lending library is housed which
features also large printed book for those with
impaired eyesight. Each Friday morning a “market” is
held when members bring farm and garden produce,
cakes and preserves for sale and coffee is available
for guest and members as they shop and catch up with
one another’s news. Each September a show (open to
the public) of home Crafts is held when the branch
members send their work to be judged, - classes for
cookery, needlework, knitting, art and photography,
woodwork and thrift, - completion is stiff between
the branches with cups and honors to be won. Then
three (3) times a year a magazine is produced, to
keep members and friends in touch with the work of
the league.
The branches hold regular meetings and raise funds
in different ways, usually with one or two major
fundraising efforts each year. More that Kenya
shilling 1.5 Million is raised and distributed at
year’s end to homes for the elderly, for orphans,
for schools, children’s homes and hospitals.
In Malindi, the branch has adopted Airport Primary
School as its primary project and has helped over
the years with such funds as it can raise – to date,
KSh. 327,750. The needs are overwhelming as the
parents are mainly poor and unemployed, thus unable
to pay fees regularly.
We are gratefully for any help visitors could bring,
pencils, crayons, children’s coloring books and so
on. Ideally, sponsorship of a child’s fees,
currently KSh. 3,600 per year, but then uniforms,
shoes and exercise books are also needed – so KSh.
5000 a year would go along way. The Modalities are
being studied
