3 : Lamu Safari
Lamu is 40 minutes flying time from Malindi. Lamu
town was established on its present site in the
14th Century, but there had been
people living on the
Island
for a much longer time. The
port
of Lamu
was an important trading center in the 18th
Century but lost its commercial position to
Mombasa
to retain the dhow culture of travel. Now you
can find there one of the last remnants of the
Swahili civilization. Lamu itself is fascinating
and a stroll through the old streets is a must
with no monuments, but hundreds of ancient
houses. The museum is not to be missed and very
few towns in Africa
have kept their original town plans intact.
Lamu beach is spectacular and
Shela
Beach
one of the best in the world.
